2026 is the first year you can buy back a Pillar 3a gap (2025). Pay the full 2026 contribution first, then buy in up to CHF 7'258 extra — both fully deductible. Requires a written application to your 3a foundation.
Pillar 3a contribution (with 2nd pillar)
Max: CHF 7’258
Contribute the maximum to your Pillar 3a account before Dec 31. This amount is fully deductible from taxable income.

As a self-employed person without a 2nd pillar, you can contribute up to 20% of net income (capped). This is the single most impactful deduction.

If your expenses are below ~40% of revenue, the flat-rate method (taux de dette fiscale nette) often saves money vs. effective method. Review annually.

What changes in 2026 in Aargau
The cantonal Steuerfuss drops from 111% to 103% for 2026, so the same taxable income produces a visibly lower cantonal bill. New wealth-tax tariffs also apply, with the first cold-progression adjustment.
Official figures and deadlines — Canton Aargau
Tax multiplier (canton and capital)
For 2026 the canton levies a Steuerfuss of 103% — the ordinary 100% plus the statutory 3% surcharge — down from 111% in 2025. The city of Aarau adds a communal Steuerfuss of 96%.
Tax return filing deadline
Employees file by 31 March and are automatically extended to 30 June without asking. If you are self-employed, your ordinary deadline is 30 June.
Deadline extension
On request the deadline moves to 31 October, free of charge — Aargau levies no extension fee. Fees only start if you miss the deadline entirely: CHF 35, then CHF 50, then CHF 100 per reminder.
What is specific to Aargau for the self-employed
Particularity 1
Aargau is the only canton that re-indexes the insurance-premium deduction to the average health premium every year. For 2026 it is CHF 7'600 for married couples and CHF 3'800 for single people.
Particularity 2
A home workroom is accepted when the room is used mainly professionally and you regularly do a substantial part of your work there. The deductible share is the rent divided by the number of rooms plus two, plus CHF 30 per m² per year for utilities.
Particularity 3
For wealth tax, unlisted Swiss shares — including the shares of your own company — are valued at a 50% discount (§ 54 StG), and the combined income and wealth tax is capped at 70% of net income (§ 56 StG).
Particularity 4
Childcare costs are deductible up to CHF 25'000 per child under 14, one of the more generous cantonal caps.
