Deductions

Home office deduction

No fixed cap

If you work from home regularly and have a dedicated workspace, you can deduct a share of rent/mortgage interest, utilities, and insurance proportional to the office area.

Canton note: Zurich accepts actual costs or a flat CHF 2,400/year if no detailed records.

Professional tools and training

No fixed cap

Deduct software subscriptions, hardware, books, courses, and conference fees directly tied to your business activity.

Vehicle / travel expenses

No fixed cap

Deduct business travel at CHF 0.70/km (car) or actual public transport costs. Keep a logbook for mixed-use vehicles.

Meal deduction (away from home)

No fixed cap

When working at a client site or traveling for business, deduct CHF 15/meal for lunch and CHF 27.50 for dinner.

Health insurance premium deduction

Max: CHF 5’200

Health and accident insurance premiums are deductible up to a canton-specific cap for self-employed persons.

Canton note: Zurich: max CHF 5,200 for single taxpayers (2025).

Interest on business loans

No fixed cap

Interest paid on loans used exclusively for business purposes (equipment, working capital) is fully deductible.

Applies from CHF 50’000 revenue

Contributions

Pillar 3a buy-in for a missed year (new)

Max: CHF 7’258

2026 is the first year you can buy back a Pillar 3a gap (2025). Pay the full 2026 contribution first, then buy in up to CHF 7'258 extra — both fully deductible. Requires a written application to your 3a foundation.

Pillar 3a contribution (with 2nd pillar)

Max: CHF 7’258

Contribute the maximum to your Pillar 3a account before Dec 31. This amount is fully deductible from taxable income.

Pillar 3a contribution (without 2nd pillar)

Max: CHF 36’288

As a self-employed person without a 2nd pillar, you can contribute up to 20% of net income (capped). This is the single most impactful deduction.

Timing

Pay provisional AHV before year-end

No fixed cap

AHV/IV/EO contributions paid in the current year are deductible for that year. Ensure your provisional contributions are paid before Dec 31.

Immediate asset write-off

Max: CHF 1’000

Assets under CHF 1,000 can typically be expensed immediately. For larger items, use declining-balance depreciation (often 25-40% per year depending on asset class).

Structure

VAT method optimization

No fixed cap

If your expenses are below ~40% of revenue, the flat-rate method (taux de dette fiscale nette) often saves money vs. effective method. Review annually.

Requires VAT registration

What changes in 2026 in Zürich

The one change for individuals is the Steuerfuss: 98% down to 95%, set for both 2026 and 2027. No revision of the tariff or of the deductions was found.

Official figures and deadlines — Canton Zürich

Tax multiplier (canton and capital)

The cantonal Steuerfuss falls to 95% for 2026, from 98% — the largest cut in about twenty years — and is set at that level for 2027 as well. The City of Zürich charges 119%, unchanged since 2022, and church tax runs at 10%, 10% or 14% depending on the confession.

Tax return filing deadline

The ordinary filing deadline is 31 March. A request to extend it has to arrive before 31 March — a later request is simply not considered.

Deadline extension

The City of Zürich grants extensions to 30 September, and these can be extended once more to 30 November at the latest. No fee is published either way.

What is specific to Zürich for the self-employed

Particularity 1

If you have no staff, only 50% of your own 2nd-pillar contributions count as a business expense; you claim the other half as a personal deduction in the return.

Particularity 2

Zürich uses the monistic system for real estate: gains on business property fall largely under the property gains tax, and only recaptured depreciation is taxed as income.

Particularity 3

For the 2025 tax year — the one you file in 2026 — the insurance deduction is CHF 5'800 married with a 2nd pillar or 3a and CHF 8'700 without (CHF 2'900 and CHF 4'350 single), plus CHF 1'300 per child; cantonal childcare is CHF 25'000 per child.

Particularity 4

Business losses can be carried forward for seven years.
