2026 is the first year you can buy back a Pillar 3a gap (2025). Pay the full 2026 contribution first, then buy in up to CHF 7'258 extra — both fully deductible. Requires a written application to your 3a foundation.
Pillar 3a contribution (with 2nd pillar)
Max: CHF 7’258
Contribute the maximum to your Pillar 3a account before Dec 31. This amount is fully deductible from taxable income.

Max: CHF 36’288
As a self-employed person without a 2nd pillar, you can contribute up to 20% of net income (capped). This is the single most impactful deduction.

AHV/IV/EO contributions paid in the current year are deductible for that year. Ensure your provisional contributions are paid before Dec 31.
Immediate asset write-off

If your expenses are below ~40% of revenue, the flat-rate method (taux de dette fiscale nette) often saves money vs. effective method. Review annually.

Official figures and deadlines — Canton Appenzell Ausserrhoden
Tax multiplier (canton and capital)

Appenzell Ausserrhoden publishes no fixed calendar deadline: the date that applies to you is printed on your tax return. The 31 March and 30 June dates often quoted online are payment dates, not filing dates. Electronic filing for the 2025 return opened around 20 January 2026.

What is specific to Appenzell Ausserrhoden for the self-employed
Particularity 1
Movable business assets — furniture, IT equipment including software, vehicles, machines — can be written off 100% in the year of acquisition, with no later balancing surcharge (Merkblatt valid from 2026). For an equipment-heavy solo business this is the single biggest timing lever in the canton.
Particularity 2
Other business reserves are generous too: 30% on special-purpose buildings, a 10% del credere allowance without proof, 33.3% on inventory, and a provision for your own AHV contributions.
Particularity 3
The income tariff turns degressive at the top: above CHF 260'800 (single) and CHF 417'200 (married), both indexed, the simple tax becomes a flat 2.60% of the entire income.
Particularity 4
Wealth tax is close to flat at 0.50–0.55 per mille, with allowances of CHF 75'000 single, CHF 150'000 married and CHF 25'000 per child. Childcare is deductible up to CHF 25'000 and the insurance deduction is CHF 2'700 single / CHF 5'400 married, plus CHF 1'000 per child.
